This is another craft inspired by the Happy Home Fairy. The girls love to have the Christmas lights on – they’d have them on all the time if they could – so I was sure they would enjoy this activity.
One piece of plain cardboard (per child)
Different coloured paints
Before letting the girls loose with painted fingers, I drew the wire for the lights on the cardboard and wrote the verse along the bottom edge.
Angie was eager to get going but Emmy refused to dip her fingers in the paint. I should have expected it; this is the child who doesn’t like to get her hands dirty even when she’s eating. So Emmy watched while Angie dipped her thumb in the paint pot and started making lights. We did one colour at a time to keep the mess to a minimum.
While Angie painted, I asked the girls what was so special about light. “It makes the darkness go away,” said Angie. Then I asked them if they knew what light had to do with Jesus. I explained that Jesus called himself the Light of the World; that he came to chase away the darkness of sin.
“I am the Light of the World. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” John 8:12
