It is my husband’s birthday today. I never know what gift to get him – why are men so difficult to buy for? But in a couple of weeks I’ll be giving him a son, so surely that counts as the Best Present Ever? (And covers his birthday, Christmas and Father’s Day? No?)
I’ve also been struggling with what I wanted to say in this blog post. Last year I shared the Date Night Jar I made for him, and the year before I told the world why I thought he was so amazing. (All those reasons are still valid, by the way.)
Jacques prays with me before he leaves for work every day. Some mornings, I’m not even awake enough to register his words, but just the knowledge that he lifts me and the girls and our unborn son to God before he begins his day assures me of his love for us.
He puts the girls to bed at night, and prays with them before they sleep. He prays with me before I go to sleep too.
I pray for him, too, of course, but it’s usually in my quiet time. I pray for him when we pray together, but not often enough.
So, this year, I am going to share a prayer for my husband that I hope may inspire you to pray regularly with and for your husband.
Thank you for my husband. Thank you for the man that you have created him to be. Thank you for our marriage, and for our children.
Thank you for the desire you have placed in his heart to seek after you. I pray that his relationship with you will grow deeper and stronger, and that you will help him to be the spiritual leader of our family. Give him wisdom and encourage him to draw on your strength when his own feels insufficient.
I pray that his love for you overflows into every aspect of his relationship with others. I pray that he would love me as you instruct in your Word, and that you help me to honour him the way that a godly wife should. I pray that he would be a father who models godly fatherhood, pointing our children toward you. Help him to be patient when they test boundaries and show defiance.
I pray that you will guard his health, and help him to make wise choices regarding sleep, exercise and diet. I pray that you will help him to prosper at work, and also to be a shining light for you in his workplace.
I pray that you will help him to resist sexual temptations as well as the temptation to spend his time on less important pursuits. I pray that our marriage and family will be second only to you in his heart.
Lord, I pray that you will bless our marriage, and that you will continue to strengthen and grow our relationship with each other.
In Jesus’ name I pray,
Happy birthday, amazing man. I couldn’t ask for a better husband for me, or father for our children.
