Packing The Hospital Bag

One of the exciting things about preparing for the arrival of Peanut was letting the girls help me pack his hospital bag a few weeks ago. Despite the countdown chart we’ve been using to mark the time, Emmy thought that packing the bag meant I was going to the hospital that day to have him – and was disappointed to learn she still had to wait a couple more weeks before getting to meet her baby brother. (And, probably more disappointing, having to wait for the five-day sleepover at Nana’s house.)

Most hospitals give the mom-to-be a list of what to bring, and most pregnancy books also have lists. Based on the list from my hospital (and my admittedly fuzzy memory of having the girls) here’s what we packed for Peanut:

Toiletries

Packing The Hospital Bag

  • size 1 nappies
  • wet wipes
  • bum cream
  • cotton balls
  • aqueous cream
  • baby shampoo
  • ear buds
  • surgical spirits
  • saline drops

Packing The Hospital Bag

  • hooded towel
  • receiving blankets
  • fluffy blanket

Clothes

Packing The Hospital Bag

  • long and short-sleeved vests – not the body vests, since his cord stump will still be attached
  • baby grows – newborn-size (although the last scan suggested he already weighs 3.4kg so I’m considering slipping some 0-3 months ones in just in case)
  • socks
  • hats
  • mittens (only because they came with the Superman hat and are super cute)

The list from my hospital also suggested nipple cream, baby bottles and a dummy, but I didn’t use any of those with the girls.

I’ve also sort-of packed my bag. Most of the things I need are the things I’m still using – toiletries, the only three pairs of pants that fit right now). What I have been able to pack so far are:

  • new pyjamas and slippers – because it’s nice to feel pampered when you’re in hospital
  • those sexy disposable maternity panties
  • nursing bras
  • breast pads
  • maternity pads
  • linen savers
  • boxed juices and cereal bars (because breastfeeding makes me really hungry)

Have I forgotten anything? What would you add?
