If you’ve been reading my blog for any length of time, you’ll know how important it is to me to raise my children with a firm foundation in our faith. It’s why we begin our school day with Bible Time and prayer, and why I’m teaching the girls to memorise Scripture. So I get really excited whenever I come across books and DVDs that can help my children grow in their biblical knowledge. Godstories & Godliedjies is one such find.
Godstories & Godliedjies is the brain child of Bertha le Roux (aka 7de Laan‘s Emma). Bertha is passionate about teaching Bible stories to children in a way that they will enjoy. Godstories & Godliejies teaches children Biblical truths, and emphasises just how much God loves each one of us.
We received a copy of Godstories & Godliedjies to review, and I wasn’t sure whether the girls would like it because it’s in Afrikaans. We listened to the CD in the car for a few days first, and by the time we sat down to watch the DVD, the girls knew all the words to all the songs. They don’t like it – they LOVE it.
Bertha tells the stories of creation, Noah’s Ark, and Daniel in the lion’s den on the Godstories DVD. The storytelling is interspersed with singing and dancing, and Bertha shares a related craft after each story. We haven’t gotten around to doing any of the crafts yet, but the girls keep nagging, so we’ll probably do them all pretty soon!
The songs are so much fun, and they’re kiddie-friendly – unlike the junior club mix that seems popular in the worship music industry these days. (Yes, Hillsong Kids, I’m looking at you.) We have been singing Godliedjies non-stop for days. I wake up with the songs in my head. My personal favourite is “Daniël”, with “Jesus se opskop” a close second. The girls also love “Daniël”, mostly because they get to roar a lot in it.
An unexpected bonus of Godstories & Godliedjies is that the girls, Angie in particular, have actually learned some Afrikaans.
You can order your own copy of Godstories & Godliedjies via the Facebook page. It’ll make a wonderful stocking stuffer for Christmas. The DVD/CD pack costs R140 excluding postage.
