Our 2017 Curriculum Choices

Angie is technically in her grade one year, but we’re really only using grade levels so she knows which class she’s in at children’s church. I had to choose and order her curriculum in advance because I knew that once Rafe was born, I wouldn’t have the time, energy, or brain function to think about it.

Here’s what we’re doing with the girls this year:

Grade 00/Pre-K

I’m going to do Letter of the Week with Emmy. We’ll be working on letter recognition, upper and lower case matching, and practicing letter formation. I’m aiming to continue doing activities that don’t require any printing.

I’ve created a Pinterest board for each letter, so pop over if you’re looking for ideas.

Grade 1

Language Arts – I ordered the Blue Learning Language Arts Through Literature. I love watching her learn to read, and I’m looking forward to encouraging a love of reading.

Our 2017 Curriculum Choices

Maths – I bought the Math-U-See Primer. I decided to use this because it focuses on one concept at a time – and it comes with a DVD explaining each concept. (This may be the first time in my life I’m excited about maths.)

Our 2017 Curriculum Choices

Afrikaans – I’m using Afrikaans Sonder Grense Graad 1. Angie has the workbook, and Emmy just listens to the lessons. (The whole one parent speaks English, one parent speaks Afrikaans isn’t working out so well for us.) I ordered through Takealot since that was the cheapest at the time.

Our 2017 Curriculum Choices

Zulu – Schools are supposed to start teaching an African language from grade one now, so I’m using the Ant workbook and readers with Angie. I last did Zulu in grade 9, so I’m learning along with her. The goal is basic vocabulary for now.

Our 2017 Curriculum Choices

For science, I’m not doing any curriculum, but have picked an experiment of the week (that I’ve linked to the letter of the week). Thanks to Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs, Angie has her heart set on becoming a scientist when she grows up. (Thank goodness her Oupa is a science teacher. Because science was the first subject I dropped at school!)

We’re continuing with Bible Road Trip. We’re finishing up the last few weeks of year one, and then we’ll move straight into year two. Angie will be doing some notebooking in year two, going a little bit more in-depth than this past year.

What are you using this year?
