It’s autumn here, so everything is in shades of red, yellow and brown, the veld grass is starting to get dry, and wildflowers are scarce. I’m looking forward to spring, and cosmos flowers everywhere.

Our book selection was A Treasury of Flower Fairies by Cicely Mary Barker. Not a nature study book, but I have daughters who love fairies, and I’m pretty sure I had a colouring book with these illustrations when I was a little girl.

We used the book during our poetry teatimes, and I wrote my own flower fairy poem as well.

Oh, fairy child in the cosmos flowers
Enrobed in purple, pink and white,
I’ve been waiting here for hours
And still you remain out of sight.

The birds are singing, the breeze is slow;
It’s a perfect fairy holiday.
Blossom to blossom the butterflies go,
Oh, why won’t you come out to play?

We can weave floral crowns and wear flower rings
Fit for the fairy queen’s court.
I do wish I also had gossamer wings–
Alas, those cannot be bought.

These long summer days are no fun spent alone;
Fairy friend, come and frolic with me.
When we are tired, we’ll rest in the sun–
There is nectar and fruit for our tea.

Oh no! Mother’s calling; playtime’s over again,
Might I sojourn here some other day?
I’ll pick a few flowers before I go in
To make Mother’s cosmos bouquet.

We also did some art to go with the poem. We sponged blue and white paint for the sky and used our fingers to make the cosmos flowers. I printed out fairies from some colouring pages I’d downloaded ages ago. We modge podged the fairies onto the canvas, painted them, then added another layer of modge podge afterwards.
